Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers (PAT), a national home-visiting teaching model, supports families by learning their perspectives, understanding their needs and wishes, and facilitating their decision-making abilities. At its core, PAT is relationship based and parent focused. Our PAT programs serve pregnant women and families with children from birth to age five.

Nationally certified Parent Educators deliver PAT services to families in their homes, helping them to learn new skills and build on their strengths. We offer bi-monthly home visits and monthly group socialization in order to provide parents with essential early learning tools while creating a safe, social place for them to engage with one another and build a strong community. This system creates a sense of self-efficacy that gives rise to parents’ ability to make appropriate behavior changes.

Our PAT providers are supported and guided by an advisory board that serves to evaluate current services and explore expanding services. Advisory board members represent community agencies, Alaska Native organizations, and local Elders.
