The Sacred Beginnings: Strong Bodies, Strong Minds Project improves Head Start families’ access to healthy foods and active lifestyles by installing hydroponic gardens and implementing supplemental physical activity-based curriculums. In partnership with Kawerak, Inc., hydroponic gardens have been installed at RurAL CAP and Kawerak Head Start centers in Savoonga, Gambell, St. Michael, and Stebbins, as well as the Anchorage Child Development Center.   

Children are involved in every aspect of gardening, from laying soil to enjoying their produce at lunch and snack time. We incorporate gardening into our classroom and take-home activities to increase access, awareness, education, and appreciation of edible plants among children and families.
